My name is Tom McGrady and I build custom hand-made Porch Swings and Garden Arbors in my one man studio right here in Fabulous Las Vegas. I build Porch Swings because they make people happy and that makes me happy. My
business name is Las Vegas Swings.
I learned my craft as a young man in the early 1970's
from a Quaker furniture maker in historic Chester County, PA. His shop was in an
old barn, he worked alone and never hired anyone. I asked him for a job. Although he
wanted to hire me he was fearful of the embarrassment he would feel if one day
he was not able to make payroll.
I had always
been impressed with the craftsmanship that allowed barns, homes and furniture
to survive for hundreds of years. Because I saw the value of this craft
I told the Quaker I would work for only $1.00 a hour so long as he would teach
me how to build authentic furniture like that of the colonial era. I got the job. During this time I also appreniced with a third generation musical instrument maker and play an acustical guitar which I built.
Life took me away from my childhood
neighborhood and into the world of fine arts. I spent 25 years selling paintings, sculptures and managing fine art galleries in Reno, San Francisco, Maui and Las Vegas. However my passion for woodworking stayed with me and finally after many years representing the work
of other artists I decided to become an artist, the backyard artist, building fine Porch Swings and Garden Arbors for you're relaxation and pleasure.
As an artist I strive for
beauty, excellent craftsmanship, and most importantly, comfort in every Porch Swing I build. Each Porch Swing is carefully
crafted using the finest woods, finishes and hardware available.
Seven coats of the very best Marine Varnish is hand brushed onto Black Walnut,
Cherry and White Oak for ultimate protection from the elements and a warm rich
patina.
My Grand Arbor is handcrafted with
the same attention to detail found in fine woodworking, but most often missing
in today’s marketplace. Every arbor is made from California Redwood, finished
with an exterior penetrating oil stain and built to last.
Because so much time is devoted to
every Porch Swing I become intimately involved with each one. We become friends. And,
I like to find my friends nice homes with good families that will cherish, care for and make their new Porch Swing a family heirloom.
I take a lot of satisfaction and pride in my work.
My hope is for those who purchase my Porch Swings feel the same joy and pride in ownership."
I believe my swings will be
antiques one day, passed down and enjoyed from one generation to the next. Children
love them and I hope you do too.
